Questions about flight times

How long is a private flight from New York to Turks and Caicos?

About 3 h 5 min in a midsize jet from Teterboro to Providenciales, 1,322 miles (2,128 km) in a straight line. A turboprop takes about 4 h 30 min.

How long is the flight from Miami to St. Barts?

The St. Barts runway is too short for the jets in our table, so a jet flight ends at St. Maarten (SXM) and a short hop follows. Opa-locka to SXM takes about 2 h 55 min in a midsize jet.

Why is this shorter than an airline schedule?

Airline block times carry padding for traffic and busy hubs, and they cover gate to gate. This is a straight line at published cruise speed plus a fixed allowance, with no wind.

Does wind change the answer?

Yes. A headwind adds time and can add a fuel stop on a long route, and a tailwind takes time off. Your operator gives the real figure for your date.

Method and limits

  • Flight time is the great-circle distance divided by the published cruise speed of the reference aircraft, plus 30 minutes for taxi, climb and descent, rounded to five minutes.
  • A route longer than the published range gets a fuel stop, which adds 45 minutes. Published ranges use their maker’s load and reserves, so a full cabin can need a stop sooner.
  • There is no wind in the math, and no routing around weather or airspace.
  • Runway fit compares the usable take-off run with the published take-off distance at maximum weight. On a short flight an aircraft leaves lighter and needs less, so ask the operator about any runway marked too short.
  • The result is an estimate for planning, not a quote or a flight plan.
