St. Barts villas by area

The island is small, so the choice comes down to the kind of water you want and how close you want to be to dinner.

  1. Gustavia and Lurin: harbor town and hillside

Gustavia is the capital, with shops and restaurants along the port. Lurin sits on the hill above it, about 8 minutes from the airport.

Homes here: Villa Vitti and others

  2. St-Jean: calm bay beside the airport

Beach clubs and shops ring a calm bay beside the airport.

Homes here: Villa BDM and others

  3. Flamands: one of the longest beaches

Long white sand with waves for bodyboards, and a hike toward Colombier.

Homes here: Villa Wake Up and others

  4. Grand Cul-de-Sac and Pointe Milou: lagoon and cliffs

Grand Cul-de-Sac is a protected cove inside the nature reserve, on the east side. Pointe Milou is mostly private villas above the cliffs, a few minutes from St-Jean and Lorient.

    Homes here: Bleu and others

  5. Corossol and Colombier: fishing village and hills

Corossol has kept its fishing-village feel, a few minutes from Gustavia. Colombier sits high up, and its beach is reached by trail or by boat.

Homes here: Les Roches and others

  6. Toiny: the Atlantic side

The Atlantic side of the island. Houses stand up the slope, and the swell here suits surfers more than swimmers.

Homes here: Chant de L'Ocean and others

Where to stay in St. Barts

Why St. Barts

Short drives

Flamands to Toiny is about 6 miles (10 km), or 20 minutes by car. That covers the island from one end to the other.

A protected sea

The Saint-Barthélemy Nature Reserve has covered about 3,000 acres (1,200 hectares) of sea since 1996, including the bays of Colombier and Marigot.

Calm water and surf on one island

St-Jean and Grand Cul-de-Sac have calm water. Lorient and Toiny draw surfers.

Local tips for St. Barts

  1. Connecting through St. Maarten? Fill in the Sint Maarten entry form before you fly. It applies to everyone who sets foot there, including passengers in transit.
  2. Plan your last leg around sunset. The airport closes 15 minutes after it, between about 6 and 7 pm depending on the season.
  3. Book the car before you fly. More than ten rental companies have offices at the airport, so it can be waiting when you land.
  4. Check the beach before you promise the children a swim. Toiny is often too rough, and Colombier has no road at all.
  5. Leave the dog at the villa. Dogs are banned from every beach on the island.

What to know before your trip to St. Barts

Getting to St. Barts

There are no long-haul flights to the island. Most travelers connect through a nearby airport, then take a small plane or a ferry to Gustavia that takes under an hour from St. Maarten.

Entry requirements

US and Canadian citizens need a passport valid for more than six months on arrival and a return or onward ticket. No visa is needed for stays of up to 90 days.

UK citizens can also stay up to 90 days without a visa. St. Barts is outside the Schengen area, so an ordinary Schengen visa doesn’t cover it.

Getting around

Most guests rent a car. Driving is on the right, and taxis wait at the airport and the ferry dock.

Money and tax

The euro is the currency. A 5% tourist tax applies to each night’s rent and has to appear on your contract or invoice.

Power and water

The island runs on 230 volts at 60 Hz with European two-pin plugs, so bring adapters. It has no natural fresh water, and its drinking water comes from desalination.
