Questions about landing in the Caribbean

How long a runway does a private jet need?

At full weight on a standard day at sea level, the makers publish 3,209 ft for a Phenom 300E, 3,580 ft for a Citation Latitude, 4,835 ft for a Challenger 3500 and 5,812 ft for a G800. A lighter load needs less, and heat needs more.

Which Caribbean airports are too short for jets?

These 9 have a usable runway under the 3,209 ft of our lightest reference jet: Staniel Cay (TYM), Juancho E. Yrausquin (SAB), Canefield (DCF), Lauriston (CRU), La Désirade (DSD), Benjamin Rivera Noriega (CPX), St. Jean (SBH), Mustique (MQS), Union Island (UNI).

How many Caribbean airports can take a long-range jet?

52 of the 93 in this table have at least the 5,812 ft a G800 needs at full weight.

Why is the usable length shorter than the runway?

An AIP can declare less take-off run than the paved surface. Mustique has 2,546 ft of runway, and its AIP declares 1,824 ft of take-off run in one direction, with the other direction not used.

Method and limits

  • OurAirports starts the table with every Caribbean airport that has a paved runway and a scheduled or commercial role, without military fields. We added Tulum, Cancun and Cozumel for the Riviera Maya.
  • Each row with a source other than OurAirports was read in that publication. It changed the open figure at 26 airports, by as much as 1,233 ft.
  • A row marked FAA record comes from FAA data for an airport outside the US, which the FAA does not publish as its official source.
  • Where the AIP publishes a take-off run shorter than the paved length, the fit uses that shorter number.
  • Largest fit means the runway is at least as long as the published take-off distance of that aircraft at maximum weight, on a standard day at sea level. Heat, load, runway condition and each operator’s rules change the answer, and a lighter aircraft can use less.
  • This table is for planning a trip. It is not for navigation or flight operations: pilots use the current AIP.
