Things to do in Jamaica

Plan your days around the house. From Ocho Rios, Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain are both under 15 minutes by road. From Rose Hall, Montego Bay’s beaches and great houses are close, and the falls are about an hour and a half away.

Jamaica is about 146 miles (235 km) long, so the far end of the island is a long day from any base. Reach Falls, in Portland, is close to 5 hours from Rose Hall.

Hurricane Melissa hit the island in October 2025. Dunn’s River Falls reopened in November 2025 and YS Falls in January 2026, and the tourist board lists Rick’s Cafe as open. Ask about any other stop before you go.

Reopened after Hurricane Melissa

Melissa came ashore near New Hope, in Westmoreland, on October 28, 2025, as a Category 5 hurricane. These sights have a dated reopening:

Place Reopened
Dunn’s River Falls November 2025
Reach Falls Restoration finished, November 2025
Rick’s Cafe Listed as open by the Jamaica Tourist Board, November 2026
YS Falls January 24, 2026

From the UDC, the Jamaica Tourist Board’s list of reopened attractions and reports in the Jamaica Observer. In November 2026 that list still shows rafting on the Martha Brae as closed.

For any other stop, and for the road to the house, ask the company that rents your house before you go.

Day trips by base

Most villa guests stayed around Montego Bay or Ocho Rios in 2024, so those are the two bases here, with Negril as the third.

From Montego Bay

Rose Hall Great House is 6 minutes from Half Moon, and Doctor’s Cave Beach 12. The luminous lagoon at Falmouth and Rocklands Bird Sanctuary are both under half an hour.

Ocho Rios and its falls take about an hour and a half each way, and YS Falls about the same to the south.

From Ocho Rios

This is the shortest base for the north coast sights. Mystic Mountain is 7 minutes away, Dunn’s River Falls 11 and Island Gully Falls 21.

Nine Mile is 50 minutes inland, and Kingston’s Bob Marley Museum about an hour and a half away.

From Negril

Rick’s Cafe on the West End cliffs is 9 minutes from Seven Mile Beach. The south coast is closer than the north from here: Black River Safari is about an hour and a half away, and YS Falls just under two hours.

To compare the areas themselves, see where to stay in Jamaica.

Waterfalls and rivers

Dunn’s River Falls

Visitors climb the cascades near Ocho Rios. The park is run by the UDC and reopened in November 2025.

Island Gully Falls and Konoko Falls

Two more falls in the hills above Ocho Rios. Island Gully is 21 minutes from the town by road.

YS Falls

On the south side of the island in St. Elizabeth, about an hour and a half from Rose Hall. It reopened on January 24, 2026.

Reach Falls and the Rio Grande

Both are in Portland, at the east end. From Ocho Rios, Reach Falls is 3 hours by road, so plan them from a house near Port Antonio.

Beaches and the sea

Doctor’s Cave Beach, Montego Bay

The beach is run by the Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club, 12 minutes from Half Moon.

Seven Mile Beach, Negril

Negril’s long beach, north of the town.

Frenchman’s Cove, Portland

A cove near Port Antonio where a river runs into the sea.

Music, history and great houses

Bob Marley Museum and Trench Town, Kingston

The museum and the Trench Town Culture Yard are both in Kingston. From Ocho Rios it’s about an hour and a half by road.

Nine Mile, St. Ann

Bob Marley’s birthplace and resting place, in the hills 50 minutes from Ocho Rios.

Rose Hall Great House, Montego Bay

Six minutes from Half Moon, on the east side of Montego Bay.

Seville Heritage Park, St. Ann

A national heritage site run by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, just west of St. Ann’s Bay and 22 minutes from Ocho Rios. It covers the Spanish settlement of Sevilla la Nueva, founded in 1509, and a later British sugar estate.

Devon House, Kingston

About an hour and a half from Ocho Rios.

Lover’s Leap, St. Elizabeth

A heritage site on cliffs where the Santa Cruz Mountains meet the sea, about 2 hours from Negril.

Mountains, rivers and wildlife

The Blue Mountains

Above Kingston, in cooler air. Blue Mountain Peak, the island’s highest point, reaches 7,402 ft (2,256 m).

The luminous lagoon at Falmouth

A bay that glows at night, 29 minutes from Rose Hall.

Black River Safari

A boat trip on the Black River in St. Elizabeth, about an hour and a half from Rose Hall or Negril.

Rocklands Bird Sanctuary

In the hills south of Montego Bay, 29 minutes from Rose Hall.

Golf in Jamaica

Around Montego Bay, the courses include White Witch, Cinnamon Hill, Half Moon and Tryall. Near Ocho Rios there’s the Sandals Golf and Country Club. Ask the company that rents your house which courses near the house are open.

Days at the house

Some days stay at the villa. A private chef, or a driver for a day trip, can be arranged through the company that rents your house or a local provider.

See villas with a private chef or send a request through our concierge page. Services are provided by independent companies, which may pay Gladori a commission.
