Where to stay in Barbados
Stay on the West Coast for calm water and the widest choice of villas. It runs from Paynes Bay, 26 minutes from the airport, up to Speightstown, 38 minutes away. Pick the South Coast to walk to dinner, or the Atlantic side for surf and open views.
The South Coast has 62% of the island’s registered hotel and apartment bedrooms, and the West Coast has 25%. Bathsheba and the rest of the east coast have 32 between them. Villas aren’t on that official list, so read these numbers as a guide to how built-up each shore is.

Best area to stay in Barbados, by trip
For families with young children: Paynes Bay or Holetown
Both sit on the calm Caribbean side, and the Folkestone Marine Reserve gives older children somewhere to snorkel.
For couples: Mullins or Speightstown
The north end of the West Coast has 305 registered bedrooms, against 1,137 from Paynes Bay to Porters, so you get the same calm water with fewer hotels around you.
For large groups: Sandy Lane or Royal Westmoreland
Sandy Lane and Royal Westmoreland hold 26 of the 55 homes with six or more bedrooms in our listings (read November 5, 2026), and both are on the tourism board’s short list of villa areas.
For golf: Royal Westmoreland or Apes Hill
Royal Westmoreland has a par 72 course by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Apes Hill has an 18-hole course and a par 3, about 1,000 ft (300 m) above the sea.
For the Atlantic: Bathsheba
The east coast has only 32 registered bedrooms. Come for the surf and the empty views, and plan your swimming around the waves.
Without a car: the Garrison to St. Lawrence Gap
About half of the island’s registered bedrooms sit along this stretch, and buses charge a flat BDS$3.50 (about US$1.75). It’s the easiest area to manage without a rental car.
For a first visit: one West Coast base
From Holetown, Oistins is 24 minutes away and Bathsheba 25. One base covers the island by day trip.
West Coast: Paynes Bay to Port St. Charles
The national coastal plan describes this shore as narrow beaches in small bays, split by reef headlands, with a barrier reef about half a mile (800 to 1,000 m) out.
The same plan expects severe beach loss along the whole stretch, so ask the company how wide the sand is in front of the house.
Highway 1 follows the coast, and hotels hold much of the seaward side. A house on that side reaches the beach without crossing the road.
Paynes Bay: 26 minutes from the airport
Three registered hotels with 209 bedrooms share the bay, so expect company on the sand.
Sandy Lane: estate behind the beach
The 132-bedroom hotel faces the sea, about 26 minutes from the airport. The Country Club and Green Monkey golf courses lie inland, with villas on the estate around them.
Holetown: the middle of the coast
Holetown and Sunset Crest have shops and restaurants close to the sand, 29 minutes from the airport. The Folkestone Marine Reserve starts just north of town.
Porters: a short stretch of hotels
Three hotels hold 264 registered bedrooms here, 31 minutes from the airport.
Mullins: beach club and jet-skis
Royal Westmoreland has its beach club here, 37 minutes from the airport. The beach is known for jet-skiing, so ask how close the house is if you want quiet.
Speightstown: the northern town
Speightstown is about 5 miles (8 km) north of Holetown, or 10 minutes by car. The national plan marks the two as this coast’s community centers.
Port St. Charles: homes on a marina
This 22-acre (about 9-hectare) community at Heywoods is 40 minutes from the airport, with homes of up to five bedrooms on the lagoon or the beach. The directory lists 120 bedrooms here.
Above the West Coast: the hill estates
These estates trade sand at the door for space and views. Allow for a short drive or a shuttle to reach the beach.
Royal Westmoreland: gated golf estate
The estate covers 750 acres (about 300 hectares) by the resort’s own count, 34 minutes from the airport. The directory lists 163 bedrooms.
Sugar Hill: ridge above Lower Carlton
Sugar Hill sits on the hills in St. James, about 33 minutes from the airport.
Apes Hill: the highest of the three
Apes Hill covers 475 acres (about 190 hectares) at about 1,000 ft (300 m), and many villas see both coasts. The resort runs an 11-minute shuttle to its beach club, and the airport is 32 minutes away.
South Coast: Hastings to Silver Sands
This shore has 76 of the 117 registered establishments. Sandy beaches alternate with old coral cliffs, and groynes hold much of the sand in place. It’s the easiest coast for walking to dinner, and the closest to the airport.
Garrison to Worthing: next to Bridgetown
This stretch has 1,707 registered bedrooms, about 13 minutes from the airport. Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison are next door.
St. Lawrence Gap and Dover: the resort strip
There are 1,433 registered bedrooms here, 11 minutes from the airport, and Sandals alone has 618 of them.
Maxwell and Oistins: the fishing town
Maxwell is 11 minutes from the airport, and Oistins 9. Oistins is a working fishing town: the stalls beside its fish market grill the catch on Friday nights, and Saturday is quieter.
Silver Sands: the windy end
Kitesurfers come to this beach, 11 minutes from the airport.
Southeast: St. Philip
Two resorts hold most of the 747 registered bedrooms here: Wyndham Grand with 422 and The Crane with 295. The national coastal plan flags sargassum as a major issue on this shore, and severe erosion at Crane, so look at recent photos before you book.
Crane and Bottom Bay
Crane, 11 minutes from the airport, has pink sand below sheer cliffs. Bottom Bay, 16 minutes away, is a cove below the same cliffs.
East Coast: Bathsheba and Cattlewash
This shore takes the open Atlantic, and the surf is the reason to come. Swimming is limited to calm days and sheltered pools.
Bathsheba: surf and rock formations
Bathsheba is about 29 minutes from the airport and 25 from Holetown. The Soup Bowl is the break here.
Cattlewash: one long beach
This is one of the island’s longest stretches of coast, good for beachcombing, 31 minutes from the airport.
North: St. Lucy
Two registered establishments with 49 bedrooms sit on this coast of cliffs and exposed water. River Bay is about 46 minutes from the airport.
How to check a Barbados villa is registered
A villa won’t appear in the official directory, so ask the company named on the listing for the house’s registration with the Barbados Tourism Product Authority.
Barbados law requires anyone providing tourist accommodation to register with that authority and with the Barbados Revenue Authority.
| Official list | What it covers | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Barbados Tourism Product Authority directory, Jan 1, 2026 | Hotels, apartments, guest houses | 117 establishments |
| Tourism board list of villa properties | Mostly agencies | 12 entries, 9 in St. James or St. Peter |
| Public register of villas | None yet |
In January 2024 the tourism ministry counted 1,401 registered short-term accommodations and said 1,201 of them were unregulated.
A bill the House of Assembly passed in September 2025 would license and inspect all tourist accommodation, villas included. The government paused it later that month for more consultation, so no law yet defines a villa. Until one does, go by the bedrooms and staff on each listing.
Do you need a car in Barbados?
For most villas outside the South Coast, yes.
| From Holetown | By car | Distance |
