Things to do in Barbados

Add Gladori on Google

Barbados is small enough to see by day trip. Without traffic, none of the places in this guide is more than 41 minutes by road from Holetown on the West Coast or St. Lawrence Gap on the South Coast.

From a West Coast base, Harrison’s Cave is 14 minutes away and St. Nicholas Abbey 17. From the South Coast, Bridgetown, the Garrison and Oistins are all 10 minutes or less.

Two places run on their own schedule. Animal Flower Cave opens Tuesday to Sunday, waves permitting, and Oistins is at its busiest for the Friday night fish fry.

Plan your Barbados days out by area

The north: St. Nicholas Abbey to Animal Flower Cave

St. Nicholas Abbey, Cherry Tree Hill and the Wildlife Reserve sit within about a mile of each other. Animal Flower Cave is about 4 miles (7 km) farther north in a straight line, at North Point.

From Holetown the four fit in one day, with the cave on a calm morning. St. Nicholas Abbey makes its own single cask rum, and the reserve feeds its monkeys in the afternoon.

The center and the east: caves, gardens and Bathsheba

Harrison’s Cave, Flower Forest and Hunte’s Gardens are in the middle of the island, 14 to 19 minutes from Holetown. Andromeda and Bathsheba are a further drive down to the Atlantic.

The east coast takes the open Atlantic, so plan any swim around the waves.

Bridgetown and the Garrison

Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. The Barbados Museum and George Washington House are both at the Garrison, about 7 minutes from St. Lawrence Gap.

The Mount Gay visitor center is on the Spring Garden Highway, just north of the city, 10 minutes from Holetown.

The South Coast and the southeast

Oistins is 6 minutes from St. Lawrence Gap, and the Richard Haynes Boardwalk 5. Farther east, Foursquare is 15 minutes away, Sunbury 18 and Crane 21.

On the water in Barbados

Snorkel at Folkestone

The marine reserve, about half a mile north of Holetown, has a protected snorkeling area and a small marine museum.

Wrecks in Carlisle Bay

The tourism board calls Carlisle Bay, off Bridgetown, the island’s top dive site, and several shipwrecks lie in the bay. The SS Stavronikita, off St. James, was sunk on purpose as an artificial reef and lies in more than 100 ft (30 m) of water, a dive for experienced divers.

Turtles

Leatherback and hawksbill turtles live in Barbadian waters. On the West Coast, visibility can reach about 95 ft (29 m), and independent companies run boat trips along the coast, private charters included.

Rum in Barbados

Mount Gay dates to 1703, and the tourism board calls it the oldest rum in the world. Its visitor center runs guided tours and tastings.

St. Nicholas Abbey distills its own rum on the estate, and Foursquare makes rum in the southeast. The tourism board counts more than 1,500 rum shops across the island.

On a rainy day

Harrison’s Cave runs underground, and the Barbados Museum, George Washington House and the Mount Gay visitor center are indoors. The wettest months are September to November.

Days at the villa

Some days are easier at the house. A private chef can cook dinner after a day in the north, and some staffed homes include help with the children.

When to plan your days

Crop Over peaks in July and ends on Kadooment Day in early August, and the Oistins Fish Festival falls at Easter. Festivals, rain and visitor numbers by month are in our guide to the best time to visit Barbados.

Things to do in Barbados: questions

What are the must-do things in Barbados?

A tram ride through Harrison’s Cave, a morning in UNESCO-listed Bridgetown and its Garrison, a rum tour at St. Nicholas Abbey or Mount Gay, and Friday night at Oistins.

Do I need a car to get around?

It makes day trips much easier. With one, every place in this guide is within 41 minutes of Holetown or St. Lawrence Gap, without traffic.

What should I be careful about?

The sea on the Atlantic side, which takes the open ocean, so plan any swim there around the waves. Check opening days too: Animal Flower Cave closes on Mondays and in rough seas.

What are the free things to do in Barbados?

All beaches in Barbados are open to the public, and walking the streets of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison costs nothing.

What can children do in Barbados?

The tram at Harrison’s Cave, the monkeys at the Wildlife Reserve, and snorkeling at Folkestone on a calm day. Animal Flower Cave and Hunte’s Gardens charge half price under 12.

What is there to do in September and October?

Fewer people are around, and it rains more. Harrison’s Cave, the museum and the rum tours work in any weather. Month by month: best time to visit Barbados.

Can I hire a private guide for the day?

Yes. The company that rents your house can arrange one, or send a request through our concierge page.
